'roots & vines', Port Angeles

'roots & vines'   Barbara De Pirro

The 13th season of 'Art Outside', the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center’s acclaimed program of art in nature will open on Saturday, June 16 with a reception for the artists from 1-4 pm. New works by eighteen artists join more than 100 artworks still on site from previous seasons in Webster Woods Art Park.

“Since establishing the art park in 2000, we’ve presented over 250 pieces by artists from all over the Northwest and occasionally points further,” said PAFAC director Jake Seniuk, who has shepherded the program from its beginnings. “It’s long been my favorite time of the year, when artists are roaming the five-acre Webster estate working their magic. Each June it’s a couple of weeks of great camaraderie and mutual inspiration among the artists and between the artists and staff and park visitors who stray into the action. It’s always a little sad to see it come to an end. This year will be especially bittersweet as it is my last as the “Art Ranger,” overseeing and tending this museum without walls.”

Seniuk retires at the end of the month, after more than 23 years as PAFAC director and curator. At 2 pm he will lead his last “Art Ranger” tour to introduce the new pieces and to renew the history of those still in place.

Webster Woods is open every day year round from dawn to dusk.  It’s worth the trip!

Surface Design Article

Mixing Invasive Media to Create Environmental Awareness

How many times had I stopped to examine this grand old tree with its gnarled and ruptured bark?
I was in awe of its unsettling beauty, utterly engulfed in a web of invasive ivy, with a strangle hold so deeply rooted into the surface; the tree bulged from underneath the vine’s unrelenting grip.

The spark. This is where it began.
